Me! Me! (21-30/40)
21. What happened to question 21?
I have absolutely no idea. Missing in action somewhere. Various people seem to be supplying versions as an afterthought to the main meme, but none of them would leave me feeling at all comfortable were I to post one. And that's just the questions that I'm finding inappropriate, before I even consider my own response to those questions.
My mum reads this. End of discussion.
22. Did you fall in love in 2003?
Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe I'm just not telling.
You see, I thought about answering this in various ways. I thought I could write something prolific and brilliant about platonic love, and familial love, and fanatic love. And then that all seemed ridiculously pretentious, and I chickened out.
So I thought I could write about two particular friendships, or rather, two particular people and the two different directions each relationship went in. I could write something attempting to be deep and beautiful in tribute to these people, about what makes them wonderful and special, and then I could finish up with a love-shaped question mark.
There are more important things in life than an all-defining and, in all likelihood, highly traumatic romance. I like romance, and I like love, I just like people more. I'm not saying that anything specific is more "important" than love, but I suppose I hate labels just enough to want to dodge this question very thoroughly.
So maybe I did fall in love, and maybe I didn't. Maybe I did and I just don't realise it. Maybe I think I did and I'm stubbornly not telling. Whatever, I'm bored of answering this question already.
23. How many one-night stands?
One. Not doing that again any time soon.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
Actually, I stopped watching TV around about the middle of april, and that seems like an awfully long time ago. Besides, I find it difficult to separate fandom from general appreciation of a TV show. Buffy's always in my heart, but I don't know if I actually liked it all that much in 2003, and I certainly didn't watch it whilst it was on TV due to my extreme lack of Sky. But I should probably say Buffy, if only out of some bizarre sense of loyalty to the show.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Um, no? Well, my step-father? Gack, I really don't want to start talking about my less-than-perfect relationship with father-figures again, and I feel hate is a word that is often over-used. So I'm not going to use it here, but it's a close thing.
26. What was the best book you read?
Signal To Noise by Neil Gaiman. I went to stay with an old school friend who's at uni in Swansea towards the end of November. I got to the station, he wasn't there. I called his mobile, he didn't answer. I thought about panicking, then checked the date, then seriously started panicking. Eventually I got a call.
"Where are you?"
"Oh, I'm at the hospital."
"What?!?"
"I think I've broken my toe."
"?!?!?!?!?"
"Oh, and we think my flatmate has mumphs."
I gave up being speechless at this point, as it was entirely wasted down the phone. He agreed to meet me in 3 hours or so, and I did what I do best when killing time: I went shopping. Found a rather magnificent selection of graphic novels in Waterstones, and decided to restrain myself from buying the next Sandman book on my list, as Christmas and gift time was fast approaching. I wanted something to read, however, so I bought this amazing book and went to sit in Burger King to eat onion rings whilst I read. Except I didn't because the book would have got all greasy, but at least I had somewhere warm in which to sit and read once I'd finished eating.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Muse or Emiliana Torrini. The first because they absolutely blew me away when I saw them live, the latter because Gollum's Song is amazing, and her album only more so.
28. What did you want and get?
Lots of shallow, consumer items, mainly ralating to fandom.
29. What did you want and not get?
More expensive version of the above. Revelled in superficiality in 2003.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
There were so many! And as with the TV shows, it's difficult to separate general love for the fandom from actual love for the movie. RotK of course. Pirates of the Carribean. Once Upon A Time In Mexico. Finding Nemo. In America. Donnie Darko. I think I've failed to answer the question yet again.
