Strawberry, With Icing

*sniffs*

That was the last of the pop-tarts.

Do you remember a time before sugary breakfast cereals? When the least healthy bowl you could come up with was either coco-pops or honey nut loops?

It almost makes me feel old to think I can remember when the first wave of novelty cereals hit the UK. Maybe I'm just showing my age in that the wave I remember wasn't actually the first wave at all, but a misguided revival. But I remember all the grown-ups of the time deploring their e-numbers and strange colours, and it all seemed like a new and wonderful thing.

The adverts were brilliant.

The first one I remember appearing was Lucky Charms. There was a stupid leprechaun whose adverts appeared with alarming frequency during children's TV. The cereal pieces were a variety of different shapes, and came with multi-coloured marshmallows. I was so impressed I saved up the tokens and sent off for the the heat-sensitive mug with the picture of aforementioned leprachaun (plus rainbow) that would only show up if you drank a hot drink from it. I didn't drink hot drinks at this stage of my life, but it still seemed like a genius thing to have.

I don't think my mum really approved, but picking out a new cereal to try when the old pack ran out became a big event. I think I was probably highly indecisive, and spent far too long gazing up at the shelves in that long shopping aisle. I think I did quite well out of it actually, I remember one friend whose family stubbornly picked all the marshmallows out of a pack of rice-krispie equivalent. Can't remember the name of that cereal. Had a spaceman in a red spacesuit on the front.

So Lucky Charms were a wonderful revelation. Pop-tarts, however, were the best new thing since push-pops. A candy, which now that I think about it, suddenly seems far more obscene than when I was eight.

Pop-tarts were the height of luxury, and whilst I was allowed them as a treasured breakfast, I remember being in slight awe and envy when various classmates brought them to school in their packed lunch. These were the same kids that occasionally used to get raw jelly cubes to take to school. The cubes that you're supposed to add boiling water to in order to make actual jelly. Oh boy did that seem indulgently brilliant when I was still in primary school. Now it just makes me feel slightly ill, albeit still impressed.

Anyway, I hadn't had a pop-tart since I was at least 10, but I saw them in Tescos the day I came back to Cardiff, and my mum, in reversal of her previous role, egged me into getting a pack.

Strawberry, with icing. They're all gone now.

The Spaceman was "Ricicles", which were a version of Rice Krispies that were already sugar coated. The Marshmallows were only there for about three months to challange Lucky Charms, They've gone again now.

Mystery solved then, thankyou. That was really bugging me.

I've seen Lucky charms for sale on a site called cybercandy.co.uk they are £5.99 a pack mind!! P+P was £3.99 no matter how much you ordered, they're expensive but worth it!

Posted by: Lisa at May 28, 2004 6:54 PM

I used to get them from cybercandy, but now i get them from netgrocer.com. It's an american site but its actually cheaper than cybercandy. A box of lucky charms is $5.15 which is about £3.40? i think. the P&p depends on how much u order.. but for about 6 boxes of lucky charms its only 6 dollars

Posted by: Maria at June 16, 2004 9:53 AM

The last time I saw Lucky Charms was in 1997 when I went to America! They were my favourite cereal before they stopped selling them in the UK and i just wish they would sell them again! I think I might go on one of these websites and order a few boxes!

Posted by: Danny at August 4, 2004 10:24 AM

You can actually still buy Lucky Charms in the UK from a shop called "Sweets from Heaven", which you will find in most large shopping malls. The upside is that you don't have to buy in bulk and pay P&P, however the downside is that they cost £6.99 per pack!!

I loved them when I was young too. I also have the mug! On a trip to Florida this summer, there they were in the breakfast cereal aisle. They were even buy one box, get one free! I had 4 boxes for a 2 week holiday and even managed to bring some home. Oh how I miss them now that they are all gone!

My girlfriend works for an airline and goes to Orlando all the time, we bring them back and sell via ebay for up to £12.00 per box! If anyone wants any I can sell direct, 3 boxes for £25 inc postage which is much cheaper than I sell for on ebay. Just let me know. I have 17 boxes now and will get another suitcase full in 2 weeks. The only problem is they are addictive, I'm a Lucky Charm pusher!!

If tesco made an exclusive deal with american companies think how good that would be.
A whole supermarket aisle with cereals, candy, soda.

Posted by: Holly at December 10, 2006 9:59 PM

Sorry Holly, Wal Mart don't own Morrisons, it's ASDA they own!!! Fight The Power! Bit rubbish us having to rely of imports though isn't it?
