Old Sketches, New Sketches
They so old, they so funny lookin':
In my eyes, they are. I drew these few pieces an awfully long time ago, as evidenced by the fandom. They were probably drawn with a push-pencil before I'd started my even now meager art supplies collection. I don't remember much about the first, but I know the last two were attempts at drawing in a more graphic style. (Graphic? Is that the right word? The type of drawings you find in comic books, that's what I was trying for.) I don't really see them as all that successful, which probably has something to do with the fact that I seem to have ignored entire eyes and noses. However much fun I had with the hair at the time, I'm still glad I no longer draw like this.
Frodo - this was originally drawn far lighter, but after encouragement by a housemate I reattacked with much darker shading. Overall I'm pleased, and I'm glad I followed his advice because I think the slightly bronzed effect that Frodo has by this point in the movie comes across better.
Pippin - my first attempt at drawing a character full length from a photo. It wasn't actually as difficult as I thought it would be to detail the clothing, but the face obviously leaves a little to be desired. Meh, I got the basic expression even if I did mess up one of his eyes rather royally.
Merry - one of my least favourite here. The neck got all smudged and he's not really as worked into as I'd like. This photo is a brilliant expression of Merry, though, and I love all the hobbit costumes.
Legolas - the other one I'm not so proud of. It's just not quite right, might be his left eye. I'm still coming to terms with the fact that I actually sketched dear old Leggy. I keep waiting to find I've sprouted fangirl horns and de-aged by 6 years. Ah, well, he's a funny looking guy to draw, and if you pay attention he really does have a slightly crooked nose.
Galadriel - my personal favourite. I think I might be a little bit in love with Cate Blanchett, or Galadriel, or both. It was a gorgeous photo to sketch from.
Gollum - first attempt with charcoal. Drawn from a photo of one of the maquettes. I never quite felt like I finished this, but it's been abandoned for so long now I think it's fairly safe to say I won't be coming back to it.
Uruk-Hai - these guys are just the most fun to draw ever. I always fail to get the
As an end note to this: You know you've done too much fanart... when the Lothlorien brooches you were initially crazy over become the most hideous things ever. Seriously. I'm so completely sick of them. I will not be drawing any more fellowship members unless they're Gandalf or pre-Lothlorien. No more of the damn brooches.
